Neruda's "Fable of the Mermaid and the Drunks"

All those men were there inside,
when she came in totally naked.
They had been drinking: they began to spit.
Newly come from the river, she knew nothing.
She was a mermaid who had lost her way.
The insults flowed down her gleaming flesh.
Obscenities drowned her golden breasts.
Not knowing tears, she did not weep tears.
Not knowing clothes, she did not have clothes.
They blackened her with burnt corks and cigarette stubs,
and rolled around laughing on the tavern floor.
She did not speak because she had no speech.
Her eyes were the colour of distant love,
her twin arms were made of white topaz.
Her lips moved, silent, in a coral light,
and suddenly she went out by that door.
Entering the river she was cleaned,
shining like a white stone in the rain,
and without looking back she swam again
swam towards emptiness, swam towards death.

Pablo Neruda

I've always been quite taken with this poem...wanted to share it again...

Rusalki (Slavic water spirts)

I hope this is an okay topic ! It's one that I find very interesting. The Rusalki are similar to fresh water sirens. They're not as well known though.
*
According to Slavic folklore, a Rusalka is a water spirit or water nymph. They are the souls of young women or girls who died an unnatural or violent death. If the girl was murdered in or close to a lake, she would became a Rusalka and inhabit that particular lake. Rusalkas appear as beautiful young women who try to lure men into the water, where they will drown them. Rusalki can also be found on nights when there is a new moon; dancing on meadows or open places in the woods. With their shrill laughter they are capable of killing humans. A Rusalka's fate can be undone by avenging her death.
Whenever people would bathe in the lake they put fern in their hair so that the rusalka would not pull them under and drown them.
www.pantheon.org/articles/r/rusalka.html
*
Rusalka in Russian folklore appears as a beautiful maiden or assumes the form of a siren: a halfwomen and half-bird or half-fish. She is a spinner who regulates human and animal fertility, the cycle of the seasons, the moon and the weather. In folk tales, she is one of the many daughters of a sea or birdking, and her mysterious underworld nature is feared. Wherever she reveals herself, in forest groves or by the water, she is not to be angered or disturbed. Sometimes she is a water nymph who drowns all who venture into her territory, or she sings in order to lure men and destroy them. There was widespread belief among the Russian peasantry that rusalki were the souls of girls who had drowned themselves because of desertion by a lover or rejection by a parent.
https://tspace.library.utoronto.ca/citd/RussianHeritage/9.WO/9.L/Rusalka.html
*
Russian Myths: The Rusalka
The rusalka of Russian myths are the spirits of young women who were murdered before marriage and are then cursed to live in a lake in the form of a mermaid. There they will sing sweet songs to entrap men into the water and drown them. A rusalka can be released from her demonic form if someone avenges her murder.
The rusalka are slim with long, loose hair, blazing eyes and magnificent breasts. Their hair may be light brown, blond or green. They can assume the form of a fish or have legs like a human. In the latter form, they haunt the forests, dance with the moon and swing from the branches of trees. Often we see them sitting on the bank laughing with their friends the water sprites. Sometimes they visit local villages to join in the dances and entice men into their lakes to become their husbands or kill them.
If you would like to go swimming with the rusalki (plural of rusalka) put fern in your hair so they cannot pull you under and drown you. Some say that only witches can swim safely with rusalki.
Another group of Russian myths claim that the rusalka are water nymphs who marry the Wodjanoj. The Wodjanoj are male water spirits who live in great castles under the water and can change their shape at will.
Marriage alters the rusalka. She goes from wild and lustful to sweet and demure.
I see many obvious links between the rusalki of the Russian myths and the mermaids of Celtic myth. Both are beautiful, sexually liberated and occasionally dangerous. They are both descended from goddesses of fertility and retain some of their characteristics. One article I read makes especial reference to the hair of the rusalka. It is loose and uncontrolled like the rusalka themselves. Notice how even now we associate loose, wild hair with sexuality.

Thanks for letting me join! As I said in my request to join, I have always loved the water, mermaids, swimming, etc. I have long wanted to learn to scuba dive (since childhood), and still do, and I also have a dream of getting to work as a mermaid in some performance job, if only for one night. I feel that at least in some way, I have a mermaid's heart, and I am usually drawn the most to Gods and Goddesses that have some connection to the water. I also like other fantastical creatures with water connections, not just mermaids, though they are my favorites, and I like marine animals, as well. I also enjoy underwater photographs and art regarding these things. I didn't mention this in my request, but some of my favorite zodiac signs are water signs (as is my own zodiac sign).

I know I'll probably never get to have a job as a mermaid, but I can dream. I would like to get a tail and costume for my own enjoyment at home, at least, though.

Your favorite Mermaid find?

Ok so I am a major mermaid collector....at last count I had over 400 mermaid goodies in my posession and that was about 8 years ago. I love looking for them everywhere, especially antique shops and swap meets, and of course the internet. So my question to you fellow collectors...what is your favorite mermaid find? It could be jewelry, knick knack, art????Whatever? My favorite find ever....and believe me it is hard to choose just one...but my favorite that I have found so far is a mermaid fishing lure. She was made in the 40's or 50's and she is in true pinup style. She has silver hair and a silver tail, and from what they told me she is one of a kind. My favorite items of collection right now are the December Diamond mermaids. I just got Trixie the Witch Mermaid and she is adorable. I love December Diamonds because they encompass everything I love...mermaids, gay pride, and pin up....and they are sparkly tooo....Ok so what are you favorites?

I am newly pregnant, and am starting to 'try on ' new names for a baby. We won't know for a few months if I am having a girl or a boy but I am loving the task of naming. I've always loved the name Sirena for a girl, but maybe want to explore different ways to spell it? I like Sahrayna, do you think the spelling is too difficult? Any other similar names to suggest?

The Blue Planet
is a documentary that the bbc did about the worlds oceans that took many years to complete.
(not to be confused with 'Blue Planet' which is an imax movie looking at the earth from space)

it has many parts -- there are four dvds, and each one has a few different episodes -- i'm about halfway through.
it is absolutely unbelievably incredible.
its truly frightening, awe inspiring and jaw droppingly beautiful.
the music, narration, sound effects and especially the cinematography -- first class.

(many libraries have it so you can watch it for free)

here is an amazon link for more info and reviews

Mermaid in the Midwest

I've just joined this group and came to say hello to my fellow mermaids and ocean lovers. I live in Minnesota, where we have Lake Superior...beautiful, but not the ocean...and for my whole life I've loved the ocean. Growing up in Vermont (again, with a big lake: Champlain), I was never happier than on our summer vacations to a cabin on the coast of Maine. When I settled down with the man who is now my ex-husband, we were right smack in the middle of the U.S. I've always wanted to live near or at the ocean, and finally now my dream is closer.

I'm finishing a master's degree and raising my teenage son, and then in 2008 I'm moving to the West Coast. I am divorced now and able to make my own decisions and move where I choose. Yeah! At first I was aiming for Pacifica, CA, south of San Francisco, but recently I've changed my focus and am looking at Portland, Oregon with time spent at the coast.

Meanwhile, I visit my friends and the ocean in California many times each year, usually the Monterey and Pacifica areas, sometimes as far north as Mendocino. I'm writing a novel in which the main character is, like me, part mermaid.

I surround myself with mermaid art and images here at home. I can't wait to read the past posts and see how you all manifest your mermaid side in your lives.

Thanks for having me!

The ocean creates a perpetual song

birthing blue green cities
of fish-tailed women too
reluctant to join their bi-pedal counterparts

they would rather be surrounded by the
power of their vast watery mother
Instinctively feeding on the black algae of
men's hearts

They revel in their liquid autonomy

never struggling
for the right to live freely

As a woman should

No

Instead the women of the tides
bind themselves
to each other and streamline
around opaque creatures with fleshy strings
for tongues

And play at luscious beds of coral reef
with their fellow brothers
while singing with cousin sirens
perfecting their ancient craft

Completed Water Priestess Initiation

Peace & Blessings all,

I am happy to share that last weekend I completed a sacred initiation as a water priestess in the Shona tradition. While I was already a water priestess, it was important for me to go through this specific path as part of my Ancestral connections and responsibilities as a healer (nganga), an Elder High Priestess, and a peacemaker. I am grateful and humbled.

My mission is building bridges as a peacemaker. Ashe.

seduced by seamaids

have you noticed that mermaids
seem to have a very controversial reputation
throughout most of the worlds mytholoy?
any mention of them in history seems to be glowing
with awe, inspiration and fear.
of course there's that whole sailor drowning thing...
but the verdict apears uncertain as to whether
they are maliciously attempting to lure someone to their death
or merely stricken with love
and innocently trying to seduce a man to their arms
(forgetting unfortunately, their lack of ability to breath underwater...)
some tales recount them ripping men apart limb from limb
and feeding off their bodies
and others paint the picture of lovestarved maidens
exhiled (primarily because of their beauty) to haunt the waves.

on the water (especially at night)
i've always felt them to be a guiding elemental force,
although where water spirits are guiding is hard to say.
possibly to tangled kelp forests at the bottom of the sea
(that may be where i'm secretly hoping)
perhaps when looking for guidence at sea, it's best to stick with the stars
(or a gps)

does anyone have a strong feeling one way or the other
on the nature of these seavixens?

I´m needing to find info on tangible encounters with mermaids or sea spirits... people say that mermaids really have/do exist, but of course on a different plane. One lady told me that whirlpools are the gateway to the underwater kingdom... she said something like there are actual kingdoms that exist under water, and you go through a whirlpool to get to them. How does one access these places, of course going through a whirlpool sounds impossible for a human. I feel such a longing to go... but have no idea how because I´m in this world. Anyway, sorry if this is vague, but if anyone has any suggestions let me know. Do you know any websites that have in-depth information on this stuff? Blessings to you all.

Hi,

I created this new tribe because it seemed like a good place to allow discussion that didn't quite have a home in the faire, history, SCA or conventions tribes. The magical part is in the fact that we recreate pieces of history as if by magic.

So I am making this a thread posting because it seems the new format of the tribe cards makes it so that most people never see the listings.

tribes.tribe.net/magicalhistorytour

Whether your events and reenactments include magical influences or not, when an event really comes together and people forget that they are in the modern world for a while and immerse themselves in the experience, the event comes alive and the atmosphere is magical and full of possibilities and romance. That time, no matter how brief, is what so many live for, whether it is for themselves or to feel the power of helping others experience it.

This is a tribe for discussion of all aspects of historic re-enactment and re-creation as well as recreation. This includes medieval festivals, viking festivals, renaissance faires, pirates, buckskinner events, etc.

Historic fiction and fantasy are welcome as well.

As I was browsing Delilah's website I found an amazing gallery of her dancing underwater. You can see a few samples in the Photo Album.
It was so beautiful & inspiring! I loved how she incorporated veils to create the images. To view the entire gallery, click here:

hey I am looking for tattoo inspiration. I want a big white tattoo that suggests water, fish, mermaids, the ocean,...you get the idea. I don't want a picture (i.e. an actual mermaid) but just want to communicate the feeling of water . So does anyone have any amazing ideas? maybe an inspiring image or some original art work. I know I am going to find my answer soon. I've been thinking about it for two years now, and can feel I am getting close to actually getting more ink., just looking for a little extra input and who would know better than a bunch of mermaids? thanks friends.
love and light

I don't have many regrets in my life, but one stands out in my memory... 8 years ago I was living in Kauai and I met this painter who specialized in painting portraitsof people as mermaids and mermen. For three hundred clams she'd take a picture of you lolling about on the beach and then immortalize you with a fin. I didn't have that kind of money then, but I wish I had done a trade or somthing with her for a portriat. The paintings were really beautiful, lively and lovely and very professional. I just thought I'd share, and, who knows, maybe someone out there knows her...

The Water Maiden

I fell into meditation with ease and found myself place on a shoreline framed by mountains a very large lake stood before me mirroring the sky and the moon above. My cloak fluttered in the inconsistent wind and I stood there, waiting. I didn't know what I was waiting for until I saw her. She rose from the lake and walked the surface toward me with her long braids trailing behind her in the water. Golden keys dangled and jangled from her belt and she stretched out her hand toward me. Taking her hand I allowed her to lead my under the water.

The water beneath was murky at first and the deeper we went the clearer it got. Schools of fish undulated around us and cleared our path toward a cave. It's mouth gaping with darkness. She must have sensed my unease, she looked back and smiled. I felt reassured that as long as I was in her presence I would be safe.

Entering the cave lights from a location I could not discern. It spilled and flowed and danced on the craggy walls of the interior of the cave and fell upon a round door of blue stone that made me think of turquoise. It had no hinges only a large ring which she pulled upon. Inside was a hall with tapestries of mermaids made from a material I could not identify yet it was familiar in an odd sense of deja vu. A long table that looked like highly polished driftwood dominated the hall like it was meant for large scale business meetings and another door of the same stone with a key hole at it's center stood. I knew I would be asked to go through this door. I knew that what was behind this door would mark me forever. I knew that any sane person should be at least intrepidated, but Iknew that if I did not go through this door that all my work would be for not.

She sat me at the tabel and explained to me the relevance of my past live to this life and how if I did not uncover the truth of my past live and learn how they affected me here and now that they would echo through my existence and hamper my spiritual progress until they were uncovered and resolved. A hot cup of my favorite tea manifested infront of me and comforted me as I listen to her continue to explain the path I have walked until now. Things that I hadn't given much creedence to before came to sharp focus some made me proud others made me lower my head in humility. . . all things were relevant and connected.

Raising her self with ethereal grace she manifested a chalice from somewhere within her robes and held it before me with both hands. She asked if I was ready to see my past existence as is most relevent to now. I looked at her solemnly and nodded. I had survived injuring my neck I could take whatever my past had to dole out to me now. I can't fully capture with words the experience of drinking from her chalice, it was like liquid pop rocks in my mouth with an immediate inebriation. At first all I could hear was thunder as she lead me gently to the door on the other side of the hall. She inserted on of her many golden keys into the lock and it disappeared, key, door, lock and all.

I won't go into great detail about what I saw, I think it was only meant for me. But I discovered that I was, in that life, a pearl diver who was banished from Tahiti and made her way to Hawaii where after settling into a life there broke her neck and drowned.

I came to weeping. She was a sad and lonely creature who had just found her place and happiness and passed before she had the time to really enjoy her life.

My birthday fell a couple of days after this meditation. My friend had flown out from Virginia to be here for it. She handed me a little box and when I opened it, I thought I was goikng to cry but instead I smiled and read the inside of the box: Sea Magic. A little pearl on a silver strand verified what the Water Maiden had shown me.

There's a bellydancer who goes by the name of Dolphina. I happened to be at her site reading her bio and how she got the name "Dolphina" as it doesn't seem to be just her dancer name. Apparently she was in a severe boating accident and it was dolphins who came to her rescue. I thought it was fascinating account and a powerful testament to these intelligent beings.

Hello all... I am such a mermaid! Have a hard time staying outta the water, be it the ocean, rivers, lakes or hot springs. I believe my Pisces moon has something to do with it! I love to snorkle and scuba dive but, unfortunately, do not dive in the cold waters up here in Humboldt. I did, however go boogey boarding recently and it was sooooo good to be back in the ocean again! I also like to kayak... white and flat water!

Recently I've been caught in a friends "Mermaid Trap"... he has a hot tub in the redwood forest... Ummmmm warm water....

Looking forward to getting to know you!

Hello all my beautiful, starry, fishy-tailed friends! As you may have noticed, this tribe has now been marked "private" according to Tribe's new- and fascist- TOU. Let me start by saying I'm very angry about this- I strongly feel there is absolutely nothing obscene nor pornographic here!!!! Yet, I don't necessarily want this tribe to "private" either. But then again I don't want to have to remove practically 80% of our beautiful photo album that we have allworked so hard to contribute to- especially as nearly all the artwork can be easily viewed and accessed all over the damn Internet!

However, I would like to hear from you: would you like to see this tribe go back to its former status? If so, then I will have to take our photos down.
Or if you may have any alternative suggestions.

If on the other hand you don't mind it being private, you may so say too.

Let me know via this thread or else private message.

~Lady Una~

I'm very sorry to have vent, but I must!

dear fellow mermaids and beautiful creatures, i made a fuss over this at the tribe ideas tribe this morning and this is the reply i have got back from darian, assuming he is a tribe employe:

(yes, you can change this tribe to public if you wish!)

Fri, December 23, 2005 - 12:10 PM new
Re: MERMAID tribe censored and private!!!???
Just a quick reminder on how the system works:

If you had a mature tribe previous to the last change it would have been turned private as noted in the messaging to all tribe moderators. You can turn it public at any point in time. You control your tribe. Let me say that again. You control your tribe.

Members (not just tribe.net staff) can flag photos they feel are objectionable. That means you to, your tribe's members and others who visit your tribe--its in your control. Enough flags and the photos are pulled. To avoid this, if you think some folks might see the photos and flag them you can make the album private so only members of the tribe see your photos.

If they still get flagged you'll know that it was from folks who belong to your tribe.

Does this help? Tribe.net is giving you the ability to take control of the content. Please use it wisely (and often!). You are the community. You get to decide the community standards. You. Not Tribe employees. You.

here is the whole thread:

Okay, I want to one of our fellow Mermaid member Flora's song entitled "Siren Song", "Mermaid" by Sade, and I also wish to add a song I just heard today called "Le Petit Fille de la Mer" by Vangelis. (English: the little girl of the sea.) If you have any sea-song suggestions let me know.

Then there's always of course, "My bonny lies over the ocean, my bonny lies over the sea..." okay I'm getting corny now. ;)

Bjork's Song "Oceania"

Has anyone heard of Bjork's beautiful song "Oceania" or seen the video? It is off her latest album Medulla. I believed she sang it at the Olympics last year. I'll see if I can find a link to free viewing og the video.

Here's a view of the lyrics:

One breath away ...
from Mother Oceania
your nimble feet make prints
in my sand

You have done
good for yourselves
since you left my wet embrace
and crawled ashore

Every boy is a snake is a lily
every pearl is a lynx is a girl

Sweet like harmony
made into flesh
you dance by my side
children sublime

You show me continents
- I see the islands
you count the centuries
- I blink my eyes

Hawks and sparrows
race in my waters
stingrays are floating
across the sky

Little ones
- my sons and my daughters
your sweat is salty - I am why
I am why
I am why
your sweat is salty - I am why
I am why

Interesting how the sea has the open and serene yet dangerous and turbulent qualities, attributed to a female goddess.

Water, Water: Hurricane in New Orleans

I've has several conversations with my spiritual "mom" about the hurricane down in New Orleans. Also, I'm sure everyone has noticed the exorbant prices of gas these days- already close to $3.00 a gallon here in California. We drew several conclusions and they are:

1) No coincidence that a lot oil rigs are based here- I feel there's an underlying metaphorical message regarding the exploitation of the Earth's resources and greed.

2) New Orleans has a long and interesting history involving many diverse groups of people. I find the women of the city's past most interesting- from the madames, to those who practiced black magic (not to be confused with true voudon), and the feelings of superiority of those whose skin is lighter than those who were darker.
That said, this leads me to believe this hurricane and the water that is flooding the city is perhaps maybe the Earth's way of cleaning out all the past emotional "toxins" in this region...

Some examples:
*The sordid history of the city's highly visible dividing line of the haves and have nots- and of course slavery. The saying "getting sold down the river" was always a reference to those slaves unfortunate enough to be sold to large cottonfields in Louisiana/the general deep south.

*The city's current hedonism in the form of the drunken MTV-type yahoos that show up and party on Mardi Gras & make complete fools of themselves in public. Then of course there's the city's past with it's free-for-all of prostitution, gambling, mafia activities and other vices. This is not meant to be a right-wing judgement nor is this to say that the hurricane is a "punishment from God" as I do not believe in such things anyway.

There are number of people in New Orleans who are experiencing a refugee-like situation and I feel for them. I feel a sense of power-lessness when I tune into the energy of the people there. On a grander scale, I'm not sure what it's going to take though for people to wake up to the fact that we can only take, take, and take from the Earth before it is all gone and we are really in the shit. As I gain more info, I will post in this thread.

From Serpent Goddess to Mermaid. (Please also refer to the previous post called "Mermaids In The Ancient World".)

Also there's a goddess in Brazilian mythology called Iara. According to one website (http://www.maria-brazil.org/myths.htm):

"Iara. Also known as "mãe d'água" (mother of the waters). According to Brazilian folklorists, Iara was not a siren, originally, but a water snake, also called mboiaçu - mboi, serpent and açu, big - in Tupi. In the 19th century, a process of convergence occurred, between the Amazonian water snake and the European myth of the beautiful half-human, half-fish creature who lures fishermen with her song."

There's also a Brazilian god called Cobra Grande (big cobra.)
"The most powerful mythical creature of the rivers of the Amazon, also called boiúna or mboiaçu. The cobra-grande (large serpent) lives in the water and can take different shapes to frighten away the fishermen."

As far as I know there are no Cobras in Brazil ;)... but Cobras are a big part of both ancient Khamitic (Egyptian) and Hindu mythology. There is so much reverence for Cobras as it symbolizes so many things on so many different levels- but primarily the opening of the Third Eye as well as Kundalini awakenings.

mermaids-sirens

It had never occurred to me, until I read the title of this group, that mermaids and sirens might be related.

That explains a lot about the mythology of mermaids being a bad omen for sailors...

I am a folk musician and researcher of English ballads, and I particularly like the old folk song, The Mermaid (which was actually chronicled by the scholar Child, and is thus known as one of the "Child ballads"). But I always wondered why mermaids get such a bad rap.

I better get the ball rolling on this tribe! Question: what are some of the thoughts, feelings, or sense when you're by the ocean?
So I'll start first:
For me their is this sense of immensity, and oft times when I get sad the image that comes to mind is this desire to jump into dark water and swim away and never come back!
